Press Release

On April 30, I-20 will present Fade to Grey, an exhibition of 23 paintings by Marina Kappos. This will be the artist’s first exhibition. The 23 paintings are presented side by side in a panoramic loop around the gallery. The starting point is in the center and the images radiate in both directions. The artist renders calm beginnings and explosive endings, with suggestions of stillness, light, construction, shadow, disaster and collapse. The images share an architecture of line and a ubiquitous horizontal format, which can be likened to a blueprint or a cinematic still. However, the cuts are not meant to create a seamless narrative, but have been deliberately made again and again to skip a frame. An illustrated catalogue (No.10), with text by Jeff Nelson, will accompany this exhibition.

Marina Kappos was born in 1972 in Pasadena, California. She received a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts, and an MFA from Yale University in 1997. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Concurrent with this exhibition Kevin Hanley will present the first showing of Vagrant Observations, a two-channel video work dating from 1996. This work takes one for a walk on Hollywood Boulevard. In this new setting Hanley’s trademark mechanical movements and slapstick effects are resolved in a trance-like mood. The piece has overtones of a 19th Century flaneur colliding with late-20th Century surveillance gear.

In January, Kevin Hanley’s one-person exhibition, Bearing and Delinquency, opened at ACME. in Los Angeles. He was born in 1969 at Sumter South Carolina Military Base. He received a BFA from Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, and an MFA from Art Center in Pasadena. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
